2008-2009 Southeastern Pennsylvania Flu Shot Guide
(Updated 12/8/08) Getting a flu shot can reduce your risk of becoming one of the 36,000 Americans who die from flu every year, especially if you’re at risk. The two types of available vaccines are the flu shot and the nasal spray. Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. However, it is recommended that certain people should get vaccinated each year:
- Children 6 months through 18 years of age (this recommendation is new for this year)
- Pregnant women
- People 50 years of age and older
- People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
- People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
In addition, they recommend that people who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu get vaccinated, including:
- Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu
- Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated)
- Healthcare workers
Worried that the flu shot is going to make you sick? The CDC has all the answers to your questions.
