Be a Health Mentor

imageThe Jefferson InterProfessional Education Center is now recruiting Health Mentors for Fall 2008!

“It has been a most rewarding experience to be a part of the [Health] Mentors Program.  The young people on my team have been a joy to work with.  They are bright, engaged and empathetic, all the qualities that one could wish for in a health care professional.  I’m looking forward to working with [them] next year.” - Health Mentor

The Health Mentors Program is designed for students from the Jefferson Medical College, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy and School of Health Professions (occupational therapy, physical therapy and family and couples therapy students) to learn FIRST HAND what is important to patients who live with chronic conditions or disabilities.

The Mentors are adults of any age from the community who live with one or more chronic health conditions (i.e. diabetes, hypertension, asthma, arthritis, sickle cell anemia, fibromyalgia or cancer) or disabilities and would like to volunteer their time to teach students the importance of patient centered care.  The Health Mentors will meet with a small group (4-5) of students 3 times a year for two years.  Each meeting will last about an hour and is scheduled at the Mentor’s convenience.  The meetings can take place on the Jefferson campus or in a public or community space. At these meetings, students will talk to their Mentors about things that are important to being a good healthcare professional, their life history, health history and access to care issues that they face. Mentors will never have to answer questions that they are not comfortable with.

Health Mentors will be given an orientation about the program before they meet their students and are free to contact the program coordinator at any time with questions or concerns.

Unfortunately, we can’t pay Jefferson Health Mentors for their time – this is a volunteer opportunity. But – Jefferson Health Mentors will know that they are playing an important role in training future health professionals to take better care of patients with chronic health conditions.
