Autism

imageAutism is one of five conditions known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).  All of these conditions are developmental disabilities.  Developmental disabilities keep children from growing and learning at a normal pace.  Children with ASDs can usually be diagnosed before the age of three.  In general, these children have trouble interacting with others.  They have a tough time communicating, both verbally (with words) and non-verbally (with signs or gestures).  They also tend to repeat patterns of behavior to the point where they become obsessive.  For instance, a child with autism might line his or her toys up in a certain way over and over.  To get answers to all your autism questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

Some parents of children with autism are concerned that vaccines are the cause. To read for about these concerns, click here.

While there is no cure for these disorders, treatment, especially if started very early in the child’s life, can help. PhillyHealthInfo.org is here to help you get answers to your questions and find services in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia County. Our resource list in the blue box on the right side of the page is a good place to start.

For the latest on early intervention and autism, listen to the following clip from Dr. Brian McDonough.
