Autism
Autism is one of five conditions known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). All of these conditions are developmental disabilities. Developmental disabilities keep children from growing and learning at a normal pace. Children with ASDs can usually be diagnosed before the age of three. In general, these children have trouble interacting with others. They have a tough time communicating, both verbally (with words) and non-verbally (with signs or gestures). They also tend to repeat patterns of behavior to the point where they become obsessive. For instance, a child with autism might line his or her toys up in a certain way over and over. While there is no cure for these disorders, treatment, especially if started very early in the child’s life, can help.
