Allergies

imageAllergies affect almost 50 million people in the United States. To put it simply, allergies are the body’s response to substances in the environment. To some people these substances (known as allergens) are harmless, but to others they cause the body to have what is known as an allergic reaction. The most common allergens are pollen, mold, dust mites, certain foods, latex, animal dander and insect stings. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are usually mild and include a rash, hives, itchy eyes, and congestion. Certain people can have a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can cause decreased blood pressure, shock, loss of consciousness, or even death. It is a life-threatening event that requires immediate treatment.  To get answers to all your diabetes questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

Allergies can’t be prevented, but they can be treated. Making changes in your environment can limit your exposure to the allergens that affect you. Breast Cancer

imageIn the United States, more than 200,000 women develop breast cancer every year.  There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, but early diagnosis is often the key to successful treatment of the disease.  Women should learn to examine their own breasts for changes such as lumps or thickenings.  They should also get tested by their doctor on a regular basis, especially as they get older or if they have a family history of the disease.  Tests such as a clinical breast exam, a mammogram, or even genetic testing can be the key to survival.  To get answers to all your breast cancer questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

HIV and AIDS

imageAIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a life-threatening chronic disease caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).  This virus attacks the body’s immune system making it unable to fight infection.  HIV is spread through the exchange of bodily fluids, such as:

Bodily fluids are most often exchanged through unprotected vaginal, oral, and/or anal sexual contact or through sharing needles during IV drug use.  In addition, babies can be exposed to HIV in the womb or during breast feeding.  Currently, there is no cure for AIDS, but people with HIV can take drugs to slow down the progress of the virus.

The most effective method of preventing the spread of HIV is to not have sex and to not use IV drugs.  If you choose to have sex, get tested regularly, know the status of your sex partners, and always use a latex or polyurethane condom every time you have sex.  In addition, if you choose to use IV drugs, use a clean needle every time.  To get answers to all your HIV and AIDS questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

imageAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a serious condition that attacks the nervous system. The nervous system is made up of cells that control our muscles.  When these cells become damaged by ALS, the muscles become weak and eventually useless.  The disease usually begins in the hands, feet or limbs, and then spreads to the muscles that control chewing, swallowing, speaking and breathing. Most people with ALS die of respiratory failure within three to five years after symptoms begin.  To get answers to all your ALS questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

The cause of ALS is unknown and the condition usually attacks at random in late middle age (between 40 and 60).  Unfortunately, there is no available treatment that can reverse the course of the disease.  PhillyHealthInfo.org is here to help you get answers to your questions and find health services in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia County. Autism

imageAutism is one of five conditions known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).  All of these conditions are developmental disabilities.  Developmental disabilities keep children from growing and learning at a normal pace.  Children with ASDs can usually be diagnosed before the age of three.  In general, these children have trouble interacting with others.  They have a tough time communicating, both verbally (with words) and non-verbally (with signs or gestures).  They also tend to repeat patterns of behavior to the point where they become obsessive.  For instance, a child with autism might line his or her toys up in a certain way over and over.  To get answers to all your autism questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

Burns

imageTwo million Americans are treated for burns every year.  The most common causes are heat, electricity, radiation, or chemicals.

Burns are divided into three categories based on their severity.  A first-degree burn is minor burn in which only the outer layer of skin is damaged.  A second-degree burn is far more painful.  Redness and swelling can be severe and accompanied by blisters.  These burns usually heal in one to two weeks with proper medical care.  Third degree burns require immediate medical attention.  In a third degree burn not only the skin is affected but also parts of the muscle or bone.  These burns are often painless because they destroy the nerves that sense pain.  In addition, the skin often has to be rebuilt over a third degree burn to cover the exposed area.  To get answers to all your burns questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

    Diabetes

imageDiabetes is a disease in which the level of glucose in the body is above normal. Glucose is a sugar that our bodies use for energy.  An extra amount of sugar builds up in the blood stream because people with diabetes don’t produce enough of a chemical called insulin.  Insulin is made in the pancreas (an organ near the stomach) and helps the body get energy to its cells.  Diabetes can lead to serious health concerns such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and loss of limbs. In fact, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

The number of persons with diabetes in this country is increasing rapidly, largely due to lifestyle factors.
