Huntington’s Disease

imageHuntington’s Disease is an inherited condition that destroys nerve cells in the brain.  Early signs of Huntington’s include mood swings, depression, irritability, and uncontrolled movements.  As the disease progresses, individuals with Huntington’s may have trouble walking, speaking, and remembering.  The disease affects both men and women and symptoms usually begin during middle age.  However, younger people sometimes develop a more severe case of the disease.  Currently, 30,000 Americans suffer from Huntington’s and another 150,000 are at risk for inheriting the condition.  To get answers to all your Huntington’s disease questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

Treatment can help manage symptoms such as depression or uncontrolled movements, but there is no cure for the disease.  PhillyHealthInfo.org is here to help you find Huntington’s Disease resources in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia County. Our local health services list in the blue box on the right side of the page is a good place to start.
