Muscular dystrophy (MD) weakens the muscles of people born with the disease. There are actually nine major types of MD that affect different muscles in different ways. People with MD usually get weaker over time, often to the point where they can’t walk or even sit up on their own. Unfortunately, some types MD can even affect muscles we can’t live without like the heart or the lungs. Although MD is rare, the various types of this disorder affect more than 50,000 Americans.
