Think You Have the Flu? What Are Flu Symptoms? Know the FACTS:
Fever Aches Chills Tiredness Sudden symptoms Symptoms of influenza range from mild to severe with some cases resulting in complications such as pneumonia and even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 36,000 Americans die from complications of influenza each year. The two types of available vaccines are the flu shot and the nasal spray. Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. However, it is recommended that certain people should get vaccinated each year:
- Children 6 months through 18 years of age (this recommendation is new for this year)
- Pregnant women
- People 50 years of age and older
- People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
- People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
In addition, it is recommended that people who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu get vaccinated, including:
- Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu
- Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated)
- Healthcare workers
